Grant Douglas's Garden Diary

Week 1: first week of January

Hope you are all enjoying the fruits of your garden labours. If you are a well organised and abundant gardener, you probably got for Christmas what all gardeners of that type want - some vacant ground in your garden for some more crops.

This is the time of year when quite a lot of stuff is coming out ready for crops to mature in late Summer and Winter. Broad Beans, Snap Peas, Peas, Garlic, Early Potatoes have all done their thing. You only have a week to 10 days to get the last of the Summer successions crops in eg Corn, Beans, Cucumber, Zuchini and approximately 3 weeks to get Winter crops of Carrots, Beetroot, Kohl Rabi Winter Turnip sown.

Time to be thinking about Winter greens such as Brussel Sprouts, Kale and early Winter Cauliflower such as Snowmarch (5 months to maturity). While succession plantings of Sprouting Broccoli, Cabbage, and Summer Cauliflower should continue. New plantings of Silverbeet, Perpetual Spinach, Celery for Winter should be going in shortly. Winter Leeks also need to be in soon.
