Create Your Own Eden Roadshow
by Florian Pauls,
April 7th 2010
Questions about how to deal with gardening and food waste and how to turn them into organic fertiliser for your garden will be answered with the Create your own Eden Roadshow.
The stall, funded by the Tasman District Council, displays simple and easy ways about composting, Bokashi and Wormfarming. The friendly and enthusiastic staff are there to offer you solutions and advise about how to deal with food scraps and garden waste in a way that will be light on your wallet and enriching for your garden soil.
On Saturday March 20th the Create your own Eden Roadshow had a display at Mitre10 in Motueka (see picture, right). Florian Pauls, who was looking after the stall from 11:30 to 2:30, was very pleased with the reception he received from passers by. If you prefer to talk to people rather than look it up in a book, or have your questions answered there and then you could pay them a visit.
"I had some really good and inspiring conversations," he said. "To help people on or along the track of recycling their garden waste and see them discover the benefits, is very empowering, for both."
The Stall features three displays, one on how to create a compost from scratch. What can go into it and how much? Buckets of compost ingredients help you identify these ingredients. The second display talks about the Bokashi system. This is a clean and effortless way of dealing with all your food waste including meat and fish. With the help of Microorganisms that ferment the food you can have rich liquid fertiliser. On top of this you will end up with material full of beneficial organism that can be dug into your garden or put on the compost.
The last banner shows the use of a wormfarm and how to look after it. A working Bokashi bucket system and a Wormfarm will be there, too.
Ample information about all the above and more is available to take home. A vouchers of $15 form the TDC towards any of the three systems can also be picked up from the stall.
The Roadshow will run till the end of April in the TDC district, with three more events. On the 11th of April at the Motueka Market, on the 24th of April in Richmond Mall and in front of the Motueka Museum, both 10.00am to 1.00pm. Create Your Own Eden was developed and very successfully run Auckland. The Nelson City Council took it on board and their good reception convinced the TDC to support this scheme too. The events are coordinated by Mary Cornow from the Nelson Environment Centre. She will do her very best to answer any question you might have. You can contact Mary on ext 3.
