Visit to Golden Bay Museum

(March 28th 2015)
Report by Coralie Smith

As a result of meeting up with the Golden Bay Museum Trust chairperson Penny Griffiths at the combined historical societies meeting in February, a trip over the hill was arranged to look at the museums latest exhibition and also its archives.

As I was unable to attend I am writing from hearsay only.

Our members were struck by how many of the Golden Bay community contribute to the museum in the way of building models, researching the exhibitions, adding artistic touches to exhibitions and volunteering for the front desk.

Out the back, ideas were gained on how we might improve how we store our archives and historical material at the Research Room we run at the Motueka Museum and how we can make searching them easier for ourselves. Simple things like putting coloured strips of paper to indicate different groups of records.

An ambitious aim would be to acquire a similar computer programme to the one that they use to catalogue their archives with. Something for the future.

The Golden Bay Museum does do research and has done some for us already for our last journal and in return we have helped them.

We intend to visit the Bay more often and certainly keep in touch with Penny and Karen, curator of the Golden Bay Museum.
